It’s officially summer, which means blue skies and very high temperatures. In recent weeks, Japan has been suffering from a particularly bad heatwave, with cities such as Kyoto sweltering in 40 degree temperatures. In an attempt to cut down on electricity usage from excessive air conditioning, in the past decade, the Japanese government pioneered the ‘Cool Biz’ campaign, which allows for more relaxed attire during the summer months amongst government workers. The initiative has also been adopted in the private sector, with many fashion retailers creating specific summer-suitable office wear. However, loose clothes only go some way to alleviating discomfort caused by high temperatures. Sometimes, it seems, the only solution is an after-work trip to the cooling waters of Amanohashidate…
