The prestigious Tango Chirimen silk fabric has been crafted here since 1720.
Even today in Yosano, you can still hear the rhythmic “clack-clack” sounds of silk being woven throughout the town.
Why not experience the texture of Yosano silk while feeling the charm of its long-standing history?
Around 300 years ago during the Edo period, a silk merchant named Sahei and others brought weaving techniques from Kyoto’s Nishijin district to this region. This marked the beginning of what we now call Tango Chirimen, a luxurious silk crepe. The craft soon spread throughout the Tango area and became a deeply rooted local industry. It is rare—even globally—to find a region where so many silk weaving techniques have been concentrated. Today, Tango silk is not only used for traditional kimono fabric, but also for modern items such as fashion accessories like scarves and materials for interior design.
The Tango region, home to Yosano, is Japan’s largest silk weaving area. It produces about 70% of all white silk fabrics used for traditional Japanese clothing (kimono) in the country. This means the region has long supported the foundation of Japan’s kimono culture. Today, with its 300-year heritage, Tango Chirimen continues to evolve—reaching global stages such as Paris Fashion Week.
